Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

These teenagers are movers and shakers. They are fearless and ambitious. Regardless of setbacks, trauma, disadvantages or experiences, my students travel from all five boroughs to attend an early college high school in Lower Manhattan where their natural talents are encouraged and celebrated.

As their counselor, I know each and every one of their struggles, their fears, and what they have survived; through movement and deep breathing therapy, I have helped them ease anxiety and find balance.

Last year I taught a yoga afterschool class and found myself with 20 eager young yogis willing to do the practice and homework even without the necessary yoga mats. This year, I have more than 20 students requesting I teach yoga and meditation, and with great love in my heart, I said yes!

My Project

Most of my students cannot afford yoga mats nor meditation cushions. The first year I taught them, I asked that they bring in a personal towel for practice. While this worked for a while, the students were frustrated with slipping and uneasy grasping of the floor, which caused much anxiety towards yoga.

We meditated using our towels and by playing soft instrumental music while I guided them through deep breathing and envisioning peace; they were able to use this focus and peace in their everyday experiences and realized an increase of diligence in their academic classes, specifically in their grades and positive commendations in our school's on-line system.

When I purchased a meditation cushion for myself, I instantly felt guilty and knew immediately that my students would benefit from and love using a meditation cushion in their practice.

I spoke to teachers, advisors, and administration and shared my findings after only a couple of months and immediately, the recommendation that I include more students in this after school club was proposed.

I am more than happy to increase the size of the class, and I am requesting a class set of yoga mats and meditation cushions for my students.
