Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students started a yoga club several years ago; however, we did not have enough yoga mats for every student that wanted to participate. Gradually students stopped coming because there were not enough mats for everyone. My goal is a new, clean yoga mat waiting for every student.

My school is a small high school of about 400 high school students in the Bronx.

We are a public college prep high school that believes all students have the ability to succeed in college and beyond. However, the stress level can be very high many days when projects, exams and portfolio presentations are a part of the school curriculum. My students want a healthy way to unwind and I believe yoga can help them accomplish this goal.

My Project

My students will use the yoga mats during lunch time to unwind after a hectic morning full of classes. Students will encourage friends and other students to join the club. The club will be open to the entire school and all students (and teachers) will be encouraged to attend. At first we will follow yoga DVDs; however, the goal is to have students take turns leading the classes.

High school students today experience an incredible amount of stress.

The are desperately searching for ways to unwind and have fun at the same time. Yoga club is not a required Physical Education class. The club is a safe space where students can refocus their goals, relax their minds, and build stronger and more flexible bodies.
