My Students

My students that this project will directly impact are in 3rd grade. Most students come from a low income, inner-city background. Despite the challenges this presents, the students and I are always looking for ways to improve our overall healthy lifestyles and achievement in the classroom in productive and unique ways.

My students are full of energy.

The need to incorporate movement breaks/physical activity into the classroom is necessary to keep their attention throughout the day. Research shows that sitting on a yoga ball rather than a stiff chair helps students with attention deficit disorder.

I know I have little control over what happens once they leave our building, but I want to be able to present the students with as many unique and fun healthy habits as I possibly can in hopes that the students translate these healthy habits into a lifelong healthy lifestyle.

My Project

The students thought it would be a neat and healthy idea to incorporate yoga chairs into the classroom instead of a regular school chair. This will allow the students an opportunity to stay active throughout the school day and incorporate physical activity while also accomplishing the goal of learning reading and math skills. Being able to bring in yoga chairs will help students strengthen their core muscles of their body and work on balancing.

Giving the students an opportunity to incorporate physical activity or movement breaks into the classroom has proven to be an effective method for students to increase learning.

In such a unique and fun way, the students will be excited to get in their new chairs and learn what their great teachers are teaching them. At the end of the day, the goal is for all the students to have an opportunity to use the yoga chair for at least 60 minutes.
