This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Sitting still for multiple 40 minute classes is a lot to ask of high school students. My classroom is full of high energy 9th grade high school students from all over New York City. My students represent multiple national, language, and ethnic groups. Our school day starts at 8:30am and ends just before 3:00pm. For most of the school day, the students are required to sit at desks as they learn content and complete assignments.

Many of the students I teach struggle with sitting still for so long and have told me how they wish that they could move around more during class.

I would like to meet the students half way by allowing them to sit on yoga balls instead of classroom chairs. Yoga balls can help them to feel more control over their physical motions while at the same time allowing them to focus their attention on the class lesson.

My Project

So many of my high school social studies students struggle to sit still in class. Many of them find themselves needing to get up out of their seats and walk around. And why shouldn't they? Teenagers need to move. But each time they move around, they interfere with the learning space of their classmates.

Creating a classroom where students are able to move around without getting out of their seats is my dream.

I want them all to be able to get the motion they need while at the same time allowing them and their classmates to stay focused enough to learn about world history.
