My Students

We are the Hummingbird Charm! Each day we explore the world of learning in and out of the classroom. The Hummingbird learners work hard to build a community of trust and cooperation with an appreciation for our unique talents. Every Hummingbird strives to take our daily adventures in learning and transform them into real world application.

Mindfulness in today's society is imperative to social emotional development.

Bringing the calming practices of yoga and centering activities into the classroom allows students and teachers alike to learn techniques for self-health, relaxation, and inner fulfillment. This helps us learn to navigate life's challenges with a little more ease. Yoga at an early age encourages self-esteem and body awareness with a physical activity that's noncompetitive.

My Project

Every morning as students enter the classroom, they have already experienced the stress of the day just getting ready to come to school. As a technique to set the tone from the very start of the school day as the bell rings and students enter our classroom community, we come together in a community circle.

Before reading and math starts, we begin with mindfulness activities and yoga.

This helps us center ourselves as to who we are and what we are ready to tackle in the day (and how to regulate ourselves throughout the day). This has proved to set up students and the teacher for success.

Incorporating a personal space with the yoga mats will create an even more calming atmosphere of cooperation and space centered activities. In addition, our transition from lunch and special classes back to the classroom is also a time of need to recenter ourselves and get back into a mind, body, and focused platform to learn effectively. This keeps us moving forward as a solid community of learners and builds a foundation socially, emotionally, and academically.
