My Students

I teach in a Title I school where all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Our students face many challenges outside of school, but they all come to our building ready to learn, and to do their best to prepare for college.

Our classroom is an amazing place, but I cannot say that it is just mine, as it has become a home away from home for many students over the years.

In our room, students know that they are safe to say what is on their mind and they are truly accepted for who they are. In this space, it is amazing to watch students not only come together but also watch out for each other.

My Project

Participation in the Breath for Change 200 hour teacher training will greatly enhance the dynamics of my classroom. Through participation in this professional development, I will become empowered to not only practice yoga and mindfulness myself, but I will also be able to teach the practice to my students. Last school year some of the students started spending their lunch period in my classroom. During this time we would sit together and color. I know it sounds silly but in this time my students became relaxed and really started to talk to one another.

There were no cellphones during this time, just coloring, conversation and relaxation.

This is what I want us to get back to, but I also want to kick it up a notch. Many of my students will be entering college next school year and I want them to have tools like yoga and mindfulness to help them succeed. Studies have shown that yoga offers incredible benefits to not just students' bodies but also their minds. Having the ability to improve their posture, body awareness and coordination is one thing, but increasing concentration and focus while helping them decrease their stress and anxiety is the tackling of a whole other beast.

Participation in this program would give me the needed skills to come back and teach yoga and mindfulness to not only my students, but also our school community. I am so excited to get this started so that I can watch their confidence grow while they also discover new methods for coping with daily struggles. Methods that they will be able to take with them to college and beyond.
