My students need literacy and print materials in order to transition our centers from alphabet-centered activities to reading-centered activities, puppets, storytelling kits, and puzzles as well.

My Students
Do you remember the absolute thrill the first time that you realized the words you were pointing to were the words you were saying? Or the day you realized you could read anything if only you tried? All of that magic is about to happen in Ms. H's class.
My 21 Kindergartners are energetic and eager to learn, but they face some pretty big challenges.
They live in a poverty-level neighborhood in one of the largest cities in the country, where unemployment is high and resources are scarce. Most of my students are already at risk of becoming victims of the achievement gap. Our school is a small charter which aims to instill in students a sense of responsibility while creating academically prepared citizens. Our goal is that every one of our graduating eighth graders will go to a selective-enrollment high school. Although my students came in behind where they should have been, I have no doubt that they will be on track and reading by the end of the year.
My Project
From the minute our ABC carpet hit the floor, it was all alphabet all the time in Ms. H’s classroom. The funny thing is, we’re all pretty close to mastering the alphabet these days, and so those magnetic letters just aren’t cutting it anymore. With the literacy materials that I have selected, I will be able to transform my alphabet centers into reading centers. Right now, our rhyming center consists of six sad file folders where students match rhyming pictures. With this grant, I will be able to add rhyming books, made just for beginning readers, to that center so that students will get authentic practice with rhyming. Students will be able to experiment with making rhymes and word families, they will read and act out nursery rhymes, they will use felt characters to increase their comprehension of classic children’s literature, and they will be able to listen to stories over and over in a listening center filled with their favorite books

Our big goal for the end of the year, which we all read together almost every day, is: read, write and do math like first graders. We know that first graders are a smart bunch, but we’re pretty sure we can take them. Please help us get one step closer to our goal by donating supplies that will support us as we begin to read!
