This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My fourth grade classroom is full of energetic nine year olds who are eager to learn and conquer all.

They are smart and super friendly sometimes a bit much, once you get to know them, they'll steal your heart! We are a small school community so most of the kids have been together since kindergarten. It’s amazing to see how much they love and care for one another. Empathy in our classroom is palpable the minute anyone walks in.

Our class is made up of many English learners, students with special needs, and students at all different academic levels. Nonetheless, they're enthusiastic about learning, they're humorous and every day they show how resilient they are regardless of their individual situation. These are the things that make our kids special!

Unfortunately, most of my students come from low income families who hardly make ends meet, so it's practically impossible for our families to contribute much to everything my students need to have a successful school year.

My Project

My fourth grade students spend fifty percent of their school day learning in Spanish and fifty percent learning in English. Unfortunately, both our genres and leveled library hardly have any books in Spanish, which makes it hard for my students to practice their reading strategies. Most of the times that students are taking part in independent reading they either have to borrow books from other classes or have to choose books written in English, due to the fact that we have more books in English that appeals to the students. Unfortunately due to the lack of books the students do not practice reading in Spanish as they should to develop bi-literacy.

Adding updated library books in Spanish will increase our students' passion for reading in Spanish while also enhancing their reading comprehension skills, decoding skills, and reading fluency.

Students need a larger variety of genres in the Spanish language to choose from just as there are available in English. Please help give my students the opportunity to have a passion for reading in both languages. I strongly believe that when students speak and read in two languages or even more, we've given them an invaluable gift!
