I never realized how essential incentives were, especially as students got older, such as 5th graders. Working in a dual language school has challenged me to find ways to motivate my students to participate through different opportunities. Shortly did I realize that my students love snacks.
I have created a raffle system as an opportunity for students to earn a ticket and enter it into a raffle to win a snack.
Students can get one individual snack per raffle or get lucky when five raffle tickets get pulled out for a snack bag. Choices in snacks help to motivate different taste buds. Students love snack.
How do students earn a raffle ticket? Students earn a raffle ticket when they participate in class by speaking Spanish. The raffle ticket system helps motivate students to speak Spanish because when they do they earn a ticket, this also helps students to build their confidence. At the end of each school day, I pull out ten raffle tickets and the look on their faces makes me happy. It brings me joy that they see the value of what they can earn through participation, especially through Spanish as a Dual Language School. This is an opportunity for all students to increase in their Spanish speaking skills.
