My Students

My students need access to 21st century tools and experience in their science classroom. Of all subjects to utilize technology, science is among the most expansive. Having an interactive white board will open a world of discovery to my students and allow them to engage at a much higher level.

In a neighborhood under the flight path of busy JFK airport, students attend grades preK -8, for the most part spending all 9 years in the same building.

The Title I school is in the process of improving under the leadership of a wonderful administration team. Progress is being made daily and giving all students a better chance at achieving a bright future. The students are curious and energetic with a thousand and one questions about everything. The school is attempting to become increasingly more web-based to allow flexibility in communication with parents and grow the overall involvement. This method has high potential however the lack of functioning equipment is a hindrance. Some rooms have interactive white boards from Promethean and SMART, but others are left with projector carts that may or may not include a working computer and projection screen surface. The lack of technology makes it hard to engage in the full interactive experience with parents and students.

My Project

In a modern learning environment students should have access to the limitless resources offered by the Internet and digital world. Currently our room is trapped in the age of chalk with a hardly functioning early 2000's model laptop and flimsy/dull projector screen that only mounts far to one side of the room precluding half of the class from clear viewing. Mass amounts of instructional time are lost daily as notes are written in chalk or drawn and erased then drawn again. The wasted time detracts from the pacing of the class and overall learning environment, greatly reducing the depth and breadth of material covered each day. Adding interactive technological support for the students driven by a new ASUS laptop will bolster achievement and allow curiosities to burn wild with free resources that are only available to fully functional classrooms. Videos, digital dissections, interactive lab environments and much more are waiting to be unleashed by students.

This project will represent a step in the right direction by providing modern equipment used to impart higher volumes of scientific knowledge in different ways that will save non-renewable materials.

By interacting, students will learn much more as they see and do in myriad forms what is currently restricted by lack of funds. In addition, being able to prepare materials digitally will significantly decrease pauses in instructional time therefore increasing the overall opportunity for learning.
