This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
What better way to begin each day than calm, strong and focused? Yearning For Yoga will set the mood for my 20 kindergartners to have a successful week. These high poverty, high risk students will derive many benefits from yoga, ultimately increasing their self-esteem both in and out of the classroom.
Yoga offers an innovative practice for managing behavior, boosting energy and nurturing creativity. Yoga also links learning to movement, thereby appealing to kinesthetic intelligence.
Character education is greatly enhanced since yoga promotes tolerance, self-control, responsibility and cooperation. These traits are areas my students need to develop in order to build a solid academic foundation. Yoga also reinforces the "community of learners" concept. This idea came to me while I was in my yoga class, so I know firsthand how powerful the experience is!
We need 21 mats, relaxing music and 21 water bottles to practice yoga and keep hydrated for this endeavor.
Please help us maximize learning opportunities and promote good health in our classroom by supporting Yearning For Yoga. What could be worth more than investing in strong minds and healthy bodies for these young students?
