My Students

It has been so far so good with our first semester of yearbook at our school. We have not had a yearbook in over seven years, so we are completely starting over and it has been a challenge to say the least. It has been a learning experience for the students and myself.

My school is a Title I public school (low income) in Southern California.

It is in a gang infested neighborhood and the drop out rate is extremely high in the area. I have a great group of dedicated and intelligent students who are working extremely hard to improve their school. Our school has not had a great deal of activities in previous school years and yearbook is working hard to change this. This year we have started a monthly dress up day where the students can come in the dress up theme for that day (our school has a uniform, so this is a change for them). Yearbook also helped put together a Halloween haunted house that over three hundred students attended. It is slowly changing, but we are not hear just to provide a yearbook but help school morale as well.

My Project

At the beginning of this year through Donors Choose, we were able to receive two cameras for yearbook. As this was the first time the school has had a yearbook in seven years, we were starting from scratch. Now that we have two cameras, we are looking to expand to a third camera since at any time one of those cameras could be broken and we would be left with only one camera. It has been very much a real learning experience with technology as we have already had the problem of all of the photos being deleted from one of the cameras before it was packed up that night. Since then, we have tried to take pictures with both cameras so it adds an extra layer of back up and we do not lose any more pictures.

Yearbook has already made a huge difference in the school environment with activities and excitement of the yearbook arriving at the end of the year.

Yearbook helps to motivate and inspire the students to aim for college. The 7th grade students are wonderful (all 4 of them scored advanced on the CST last year in both math and English!) and I am nurturing their dreams through yearbook while also providing them real life skills in marketing, sales, computers, public speaking, and money matters.
