Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This year I am teaching Advanced Placement, Honors, College Prep Biology, and Environmental Science. I am also advising the Eco Mindfulness and Garden Clubs. My students care about the environment, gardens, and campus beautification.
My students need string lights, decorations, button accessories, and crafts to learn about Lunar New Year.
It is year of the snake! We got a button machine last year and we have been putting it to good use. Since I teach biology and environmental science I thought it would be fun to teach my students about some of the cultural traditions of Lunar New Year while also weaving in the unique adaptations of snakes and their importance in regulating populations. Each student will create their own Lunar New Year, Year of the Snake button. Their button must include a species of snake with it's unique adaptations. We will also make snake paper lanterns with the different craft paper. Students can hang up their snake lanterns, and wear their snake buttons. Students enjoy putting their buttons on display on their backpack.
I also included an alternate heart button mold and circle buttons. We currently have a circle but I thought it would be fun to give the students an alternate shape since we keep making more. The red paper, tissue paper, glue, and markers will be used in their Lunar New Year lantern crafts.
I have a lot of fun incorporating holidays and relating it to the life science classes I teach. The string lights will be on theme and support my students' mental well being as they are learning something new. I would like to conclude the lesson with an origami fortune cookie making activity where they can write their own fortunes to exchange. On the way out they will get an actual cookie.
