Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are dynamic, full of energy, and resilient! They absolutely love being active! They enjoy activities that are fun, engaging, and involve movement.

They come to school each day eager to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow mentally, physically, and academically.

They are the inspiration to our whole school community.

Our school is located in School District 9, which is also part of the poorest congressional district in the United States. Surrounded by construction, apartment buildings, and shelters, and the Bronx County Courthouse, there are few playgrounds and not enough open space for an opportunity for safe outdoor play.

Students love active times the best but it is not enough. Students have movement time in our classrooms in between lessons. We don’t have a gym and so students have physical education in the school basement once a week.

The ongoing stress, fear, grief, uncertainty created by the Covid-19 pandemic has weighed on our student population heavily. Many of the children have had a tough time coping emotionally. So offering students plenty of physical activity to help them cope is crucial this school year.

My Project

During this year, many of our students' families have lost financial stability during the pandemic. At the same time, children have had vital supports including school, health care services, and other community supports interrupted by the pandemic. And many have experienced or witnessed increased racism during the pandemic. The stress created by Covid-19 pandemic has weighed on our student population heavily. I want to help students cope with their emotions so they can perform better in school.

I’m want to engage students in yoga as a means of releasing stress and increasing their health.

Experts say exercise is the best thing we can do for coping with the stress of Covid-19. Exercise releases endorphins, which relieve stress and also channels out adrenaline when frustration builds up. My goal is to enhance students' physical activity time and lower their stress by providing yoga classes before and after school. By taking part in yoga classes, kids will learn better and their behavior will improve because they will be less hyperactive.

Research suggests that promoting movement and activity in children can help increase memory, perception, language, attention, emotion, and even decision making. Therefore, taking part in yoga will also help students perform better in school.
