Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In our classroom, students have choice and autonomy when it comes to reading. I firmly believe that students become better readers and writers when given the opportunity to read material that is relevant and interesting to them. Students' quality and comfort with writing also improves as they read texts written in different styles and voices.
This year, we managed to gather over 200 books for our class library, but we are still lacking titles in Spanish.
My English Language Learners who speak & read Spanish deserve to access relevant young adult literature in Spanish. Literacy and reading skills transfer well to a second language when the student is proficient in those skills in their first language. I want to allow my English Learners to have the space and access to books in their native language.
