My Project

Our students are social and very engaged in learning and the school community. They love learning about the world around them, including new cultures and experiences. In the Spanish III and IV language classes, students explore the varied cultures of Spanish -peaking people, including those from Europe, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.

Our high school serves neighborhood and magnet students.

In the 20-21 year, 55% of 1779 students received free or reduced-price lunch.

The goal of this project is to promote a love of learning about Spanish culture and literacy and a culture of reading in our school. All students in the Spanish III and IV language classes will receive a copy of When We Make It: A Nuyorican Novel by author Elisabet Velasquez. The book is a novel-in-verse about Sarai, a fourteen year old first-generation Puerto Rican growing up in Bushwick with her older sister Estrella and her mom. Sarai has questions about everything: her identity - Can she be Puerto Rican?, society’s view of her and her sister, the gentrification of her neighborhood which is causing housing insecurity. Sarai has a beautiful voice that needs to be heard and she is determined to live her life and celebrate herself as she is - and she will make it.

We have arranged to meet the author of When We Make It: A Nuyorican Novel via Zoom. In this meeting, students will get to talk with Elisabet Velasquez about her writing process and her own experience as a Latina in America. Students will produce a poem in Spanish. In addition to this, they will select one of the following assessments for the book: #bookbento, conferencing, playlist, a one-pager, or a book talk (in person or video).
