My Project

Our students are social and very engaged in learning and the school community. They love learning about the world around them, including new cultures and experiences. In the Spanish III and IV language classes, students explore the varied cultures of Spanish speaking people, including those from Europe, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. Students love learning about Spanish culture and Spanish speaking countries. They get to explore these cultures through research projects and reading. Our students enjoy learning about the foods, music, and subtle differences in social customs that define the varied cultures in the diaspora. As avid readers, our students enjoy books that feature teens like them and confront issues that matter to them.

The goal of this project is to promote a love of learning about Spanish culture and literacy, and a culture of reading in our school.

All students participating in this project will receive a copy of "How the García Girls Lost Their Accents" by Julia Alvarez. This novel is about four sisters who must leave their home in the Dominican Republic after their father participates in an attempt to overthrow the dictator Rafael Trujillo. The family moves to New York City in 1960. The sisters are searching for home and defining their identities - Where do they belong? are they American? or Dominican?

Students will have weekly reading and writing assignments for the novel. In addition to this, they will select one of the following assessments for the book: #bookbento, conferencing, playlist, a one-pager, or a book talk (in person or video).
