My Project

Our students are social and very engaged in learning and the school community. They love learning about the world around them, including new cultures and experiences.

The goal of this project is to promote a love of learning about Spanish culture and literacy, and a culture of reading in our school.

All students in the Spanish III and IV language classes will receive a copy of “This Train Is Being Held” by author Ismee Williams. The book is about two Latin teens who are facing personal challenges in New York City. Isa and Alex meet on the subway - two sophomores in high school with Latin roots. Isa’s Cuban and Alex is from the Dominican Republic. As they build a relationship, they face the complications of parental expectations and their own personal dreams and goals. The story is truly beautiful and reminds us that life is good, but complicated and falling in love is easy but fighting for it is hard. We have arranged to meet the author of “This Train Is Being Held” via Zoom. In this meeting, students will get to talk with Dr. Williams about her writing process and her own experience as a Latina in America. Students will produce a book report/book review or complete the AR Test. In addition to this, they will select one of the following assessments for the book: #bookbento, conferencing, playlist, a one-pager, or a book talk (in person or video).
