My Students

We are a class with unique needs, wants, and personalities.

Our class is made up of six intelligent, happy, and enthusiastic fourteen year old boys, who have little to no verbal communication ability.

Our schools serves all students with autism, in a high need area, with a large range of abilities. All of the students care very much about their education and give 110% in everything they do. The goal of the students is to be able to get a job after school and I want to help them to achieve that goal!

My Project

As a new teacher there are many materials my class is lacking. These materials are key in keeping students with a low attention span engaged in activities. For my students, who are mainly kinesthetic learners, manipulatives such as the place value blocks, puzzles, and cubes give my students objects to physically work with. At my school there is only a black and white printer which doesn't always work. Having a printer in the classroom is beneficial to my students because I can print in color which will keep them interested. There are many times that my students can not identify what is going on due to the fact that whatever is on the paper is in black and white. Spending a day in the classroom doing work can be very over stimulating for students with Autism. To prevent students from getting overwhelmed I have a cool down area. The area has a few sensory items but a comfy chair would be ideal to really help them get away for a few minutes when need be.

The donations for this project will improve my classroom by keeping my students engaged, because I will be able to provide the appropriate stimulation that my students need, but have a difficult time voicing.

The end goal for my students is independence. With these materials my students will be able to learn how to count money, tell time, and do a multitude of other activities that are key in their independence.
