This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For most of our students, music is their favorite subject. My roll as an educator first is to teach my kids right from wrong and to guide them down the correct path in life. As a music educator, my role and my desire is to awaken in them an interest, appreciation and love for music.

I work in a public charter school in the Southwest side of Chicago with 99% of students coming from a friendly and appreciative underprivileged Hispanic community.

The neighborhood, unfortunately, has a large amount of gang related activity and our school is a safe haven for our students during school and after school hours. My students have tremendous potential to excel and compete locally and nationally, not only academically but musically as well.

My Project

The Xylophones would be used in many different ways, not only for the exploration sessions within the structure of a class but for the ensembles of students who stay after-school to improve their performing, singing, and creative learning skills. In the classroom, Solfeggio is a very important element of music and the students would have various opportunities to explore and also teach their fellow classmates. In addition, they would learn about intervals, low and high sounds as well as dynamic structures. Xylophones encourage early music making. This popular instrument also helps little ones develop a sense of accomplishment and confidence. The xylophone is a great tool to teach musical notes or just happy sounding notes.

Although our music room has become more resourceful over the years, we are still very limited with what we can do and it ultimately presents a very difficult task to achieve greater levels of learning with over 550 students that attend the school.

The set of xylophones will aid not only myself as the educator in teaching the necessary skills but will also aid the students in learning about music theory, reading music skills, performing, taking care for the school property, and overall confidence.
