My Students

In General Music, students are constantly challenged to read and perform high-quality repertoire. Students improvise melodies and think critically about their Music.

As a Music teacher, I have the privilege to get to know all of the students in my school.

I see them grow from inquisitive four-year-olds to creative, artistic pre-teens. My school is in an area of high poverty so most of my students are not able to take private music lessons or explore the performing arts outside of school hours. For that reason, I strive to make their school Music classes an enriching and memorable experience. My students love getting the opportunity to improvise, create, and compose their own Music. This helps them take ownership of their artwork and feel a true sense of accomplishment.

My Project

Unlike most Orff instruments, which are too big to regularly transport from class to class, these soprano xylophones are small enough that I can put them on cart to use on a daily basis. With these, my students will have the freedom to create and perform Music. The great thing about them is that individual bars can be removed so that the melodic choices can be customized for different students and classes. The xylophones can be used to accompany students while they sing, dance, and play other instruments. They can help students review and perform rhythms, solfege pitches, and standard sheet music notation.

Since I teach Music on a cart and push in to general education classrooms, my instrumentorium is very limited.

I store and transport a small collection of percussion instruments and glockenspiels on my cart, but I only have enough for a handful of students to play at a time. A greater variety of instruments on my cart will mean that I can provide a more engaging and active musical experience for my students.
