Help Mr. Salyers

I have been a music teacher in the Chicago Public Schools for 4 years now. I've found that with such a strong focus on standardized testing, funding for Fine Arts programs at the elementary level is typically an afterthought when it comes to preparing the budget for the upcoming school year. Consequently, I have learned to get creative with the limited resources available. Working without textbooks, I've had to develop my own curriculum based on the IL learning standards for Music. We sing each week in class. We play musical games. We dance. My students love coming to my music class. However, The children don't ever get the opportunity to explore and experience performance on any real instruments. Their understanding of instrumental music is merely academic. Donating these xylophones will afford my students a chance to experience music rather than just seeing the notes and tone-matching the melody. Line notes and space notes would actually mean something. I could begin teaching them to read and understand notation in kindergarten!!! Each student would be given his/her own xylophone and a pair of mallets. With an instrument for each child, the possible lesson plans are infinite! I could have them focus on playing a written melody, learning a familiar tune 'by ear', even composing their own melodies. I could also use these instruments to help the children understand the concepts of high/low note and upward/downward motion. I would be able to use the instruments with the older children as well to discuss the idea of melodic and harmonic intervals. With their own instrument, students would be able to associate visually and audibly with more advanced theory topics. These instruments would also save a great deal of time in the assessment of my students' understanding of a given the topic. I could pass out the xylophones, have each of them play solo or as a duet, and move to the next student immediately without have to wait for the next child to come up and get comfortable. These instruments would benefit the entire student body in one way or another.
