Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My music students are creative, musical and enjoy playing instruments. They absolutely love playing the drums, singing and moving to music in different ways. They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically. Truly, they are my inspiration!

Our school is nestled in the heart of Brooklyn where a large percentage of our students come from the Caribbean and South America.

Many students are still learning English and we have a significant special education population. I believe that music will give them confidence and a passion for education that will help them succeed.

My Project

In our music curriculum the children are learning how to sing, move and play instruments. My school has a very small inventory of musical instruments and it can be difficult to have an enriching program without the proper support. The Orff xylophones that I have selected will give our students another medium for learning harmony, timbre and rhythm during class. We do not have a band or orchestra teacher so oftentimes their only chance to play instruments is in general music.

With my DonorsChoose project, the students will also be able to build musicianship and practice socialization.

The students can partner up on the xylophones while others sing or dance to the music. As they progress they can showcase the interdisciplinary projects during our student of the month assemblies.
