This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Limited space. Big ambitions! The weather is turning and we need to continue to stay physically fit through the coming months and beyond. Help us to achieve that goal.

Our amazing kindergarten through 8th grade students have grown up in a very challenging area of inner-city Philadelphia.

Despite the circumstances however, they refuse to let that define them. They are bright, enthusiastic, energetic, and ready to make healthy choices that will start them on the path to an extremely fulfilling future. The neighborhood our school is in has few opportunities for our students to be active outside of school so they need to be able to both discover and maximize the amount of intentional physical activity they receive each week. Sponges would be the best way to describe our students' minds as they soak up more and more tidbits of knowledge in which our talented teachers empower them to uncover. They just need a few extra resources to be able to continue that drive toward success.

My Project

As the PE teacher, I get to see all 700 plus students in their finest... moving around. But sometimes movement can make small spaces even smaller without the right structure. We have been afforded the luxury of an outside space and a modest fitness room - somewhat like a yoga studio - of which both I and the children are extremely appreciative. The only issue is how to keep the kids moving come rain, snow, or shine. We currently have a Fitness Skillastics set, but despite its success, it is limited in its progression. If we want to continually get the kids improving in their fitness we need the next step, and the Xtreme Fitness Skillastics will help us to do just that. The foot bags on the other hand will hep my students develop foot manipulation skills that will help them during our soccer units. And finally, the nutrition cards will help continue our fitness and nutrition education throughout the winter despite being forced to retreat inside for those chilly months

These resources aren't just a way to heighten fitness instruction here at our school, they are a gateway for students to engage in new activities outside of what they currently experience.

With your help, the ideas and beliefs our students form about themselves from participating in such uplifting and empowering activities will most certainly transfer far past the branches of our small school tree.
