My Students

The Maker Movement has so much potential in public high schools. Exciting learning opportunities await students who have the chance to use 3-D printers and Arduino electronics. New groups of students, especially girls and junior high school students, will find these technologies irresistible.

Our junior high school's Technology Education program was downsized a few years ago when the wood shop was removed and several courses were eliminated.

Some argued that more attention can now be placed on core, academic classes with the expectation that standardized test scores will increase. Unfortunately, our junior high students now have less opportunity to design, prototype, measure, and build hands-on projects. This project will provide exciting technologies and learning opportunities that are especially appealing to girls and younger students.

My Project

High school girls do not easily find their way into elective computer courses. While this is a national problem, we are trying to change that in our school district. I would like to teach exciting technologies that are especially appealing to girls such as electronic wearables and 3-D printing. Junior high students will be able to use a 3-D printer and gain valuable hands-on experience designing and building tangible products such as robots with moving joints, model bridges, and gears. Ninth and tenth grade computer-aided drafting (CAD) students will also be able to 3-D print items that they first designed with CAD software. Also, computer science teachers will be able to incorporate wearable electronics to give computer programming assignments a whole new dimension that is especially appealing to girls.

It is simply amazing that 3-D printer technology provides a desktop-sized device that give students a safe, and affordable way to design and manufacture products.

It will undoubtedly encourage creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration in our school. Students in many classes will learn design and engineering principles with exciting, memorable, and interesting projects that bridge the divide between different subjects such as art, math, and science.
