My Project

In my English class, we are doing a spring semester unit on World War II. Students will read a variety of short stories, essays, poems and other readings related to the oppression of Jews, Japanese-Americans and other marginalized groups in Europe and the United States during this time period.

I would like three periods to read "Night" by Elie Wiesel, and I would like for my Honors English class to read "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak.

I have selected these two novels because they both are told from the perspective of young people experiencing the Holocaust. I think that will be a more engaging entry point for middle school students.

Even though my school is 85% Hispanic/Latino, I believe it is important for all students to learn about genocide, as it sadly remains an ongoing tragedy all over the world. Education is the best weapon against discrimination, and with my help, my students--nearly all people of color--will learn how to recognize their own oppression and learn strategies to protect themselves and others throughout the global community.
