I teach a challenging World literature and American literature class in a high-need and high-poverty school in NC.

After reading a holocaust text in class, my students have become fascinated with the Jewish holocaust. My students beg me to get documentaries or more books that are similar to "Night" by Elie Wiesel. They are completely hooked on the subject, so I thought I'd take this opportunity to get them to really READ! My American literature students are craving a coming of age book to lighten the load after this unit - hence, "Catcher in the Rye" while the other class chose "Grimm's Fairy Tales." Our library at school simply cannot get these books.

The holocaust documentaries will supplement our unit wonderfully as students have only seen still shots and photos. There are several books that would also work perfectly in our unit to which I've only chosen one copy of each so that we can read these selections aloud together. A book of children surviving the holocaust I have chosen a class copy so that students may keep and cherish these books forever.

You will be making a difference for these high-poverty students by allowing them an opportunity to grasp the devastation of the Jewish holocaust. These lessons will never leave them as long as they live. Furthermore, your contribution will impact future students for many years as they enter and exit my classroom. Thank you.
