My Students

My first graders are always eager and motivated to learn! They take on challenges with great effort and excitement! They are thrilled to be learning to read and write across the curriculum.

My students are working very diligently to become fluent writers in many different genres in first grade.

They are taking advantage of every reading and writing challenge that is offered. They are excited to use a wide variety of materials to enrich their writing experiences. My goal for my student this year is to have each student become a published author of their own autobiography.

I teach in a self-contained classroom in New Jersey. Our inner-city school district has a majority of students from low economic backgrounds. Most students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. They come to school with very limited materials and resources for their use. My students need to expand their learning experiences with a wide variety of materials to spark their interest and expand their enthusiasm for life-long learning.

My Project

Help me to give my students a plethora of writing materials that will aid them in creating personal narratives, nonfiction writing and fiction or fantasy writing pieces. Students will write to inform, entertain and use the elements of imagination to create different writing pieces in a variety of genres. The concepts of creating text and illustrations will be instrumental in creating and publishing their own books this year. Class charts, art materials for illustration and individual blank books will be key materials to practice and demonstrate success in publishing at least one book this year for each student.
