Help Mrs. Jackson

I would like to teach my students writing techniques in the science room to build their knowledge through conjecture, explanation, comparison, and reformulation. I would also like to help them use words such as “for,” “to,” “when,” and “because” in their science writing in order to help them think, reflect, and to foster conceptual understanding. I believe writing will help students to express a more thorough understanding of their task. I would like to ask students to write every day for the entire school year and become successful writers in science. I would like to provide tasks that go beyond recording activities and summarizing. I would like to copy writing prompts to give each day to each of my 150 students to help them structure their writing. I teach in a public school in Harlem where 98% of my students receive free lunch. To complete this idea I will need 6 Canon E 40 ink toners, 2 cases of copy paper and 150 composition notebooks to provide each child with a writing prompt and a notebook to compile all of his or her scientific ideas and procedures. I want to move students beyond vocabulary to conceptual understanding. I believe all of the students I teach in kindergarten through six grade should write in science. We have an old copier that still works. I believe if we were able to acquire the ink toner, some copy paper, and the composition notebooks, I would be able to allow the students to express their educated thoughts and ideas to learn science better through writing.
