Help Mrs. Arthurton

My Students

Do you know what it's like to have so much to say, but only to have your thought process stopped by the sound of a broken pencil. Or maybe you jumped up excitedly running towards the pencil can, only to find it empty! What disappointment! Help keep the paper and pencils flowing!

My students live in a major urban city in Massachusetts.

They face many challenges in their communities, including crime, violence, and poverty. My classroom includes diverse learners, including english language learners, as well as some students who have learning disabilities. I also have quite a few students who really enjoy writing, but it's very challenging to keep them engaged because they have a hard time paying attention, and staying focused. There are a few students who are very hyper as well as those who require extra processing time. So I have quite a range of learners in my classroom that I need to reach.

My Project

These resources will provide my students with the materials that they need to engage in the writing process without worrying about running out of supplies. Children get excited when they see new pencils, and the colored paper that they can use for the covers of their stories. This motivates them to want to write more, and to get better at their craft. It will help them to feel good about themselves. Now we use the Common Core Standards, and second grade students are expected to write personal narratives, opinion pieces, and how to reports. So I want to help my students develop a love of writing at this early age. These resources run out so fast I can't keep up with them, but the students need them, because writing is used in every subject, but the writing prompts are my main focus. I want my students to learn how to become better writers.

Words can't really convey the need for these basic materials that these children have.

I have a deep desire to do my best as a teacher, but sometimes I can't provide all of the things that they need. Writing is also fundamental!! It's a way that children can also express their feelings, and what their going through. Writing is the way that students get through school. If they have what they need to do it, then they will more than likely enjoy it better.
