My Students

"Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for the rest of his life."- Chinese Proverb This quote describes my classroom. We teach students to look for answers, to use what they know, and to look at their surroundings for words. Words & pictures are all over.

My students are Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing and mostly Latino.

They all communicate through American Sign Language. They are in grades: Second, Third, and Fourth. All of them are behind in reading and writing, yet they are excited to come to school, to learn, and experience life. They are visual learners especially when it comes to reading and writing. Our class is located in East Los Angeles in a regular education campus that houses two Magnets schools as well. Our school has housed the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing program for over 20 years.

My Project

Our students enjoy using the old computers (5+ years) that we have in class as a culmination of the writing process. They like to type and add pictures to their writing. The computer and color printer will be used by the students to supplement our word walls in all subject areas.

The color printer and ink will be used to improve my classroom by giving my students more access to the English language via print and pictures all over the walls.

My students will become independent writers by using the accessible print in the classroom. They will be able to express themselves in print with pictures. They will be one step closer to being at grade level.
