Please help teens in New York City get a second chance at a diploma! I am an English teacher teaching a Creative Writing course at an alternative transfer high school in NYC. Our students have all dropped out of high school and experienced roadblocks at previous schools but have made the inspiring decision to return to school for a Regents diploma. Many of these students have overcome extreme challenges such as teen pregnancy, prison, serious illnesses, living in shelters and foster care and they are still pushing themselves to graduate and move on to college. Our school gives these high need student the individual support they need through smaller class sizes, increased support from counseling staff, and internship placements to foster self-motivation, responsibility, and self-confidence.

While our students have taken the first and most crucial step of deciding to re-enroll themselves in school, they still face some grave challenges. They are significantly behind in critical English writing and reading skills. Many 18 year old students are reading at an upper elementary school level. It is critical that we provide them with incentives and engaging assignments that will help them to increase their reading level and writing skills quickly.

Students really enjoy writer's workshop because it allows them to tell their personal stories and publish their writing and share it with their peers. This pride and engagement helps them to be more productive and develops crucial writing skills through practice writing, and reading and examining mentor texts such as Finding Fish, Dreams from My Father, and other read-aloud texts that display similar themes as the writing assignments they are completing themselves. Specifically the materials requested in this proposal will allow them to produce professional personal essays or narratives that they can take pride in. They will use art supplies to create decorative covers (these also are a useful tool for differentiation for students who are more visual learners and excel at this form of expression). They will use the text as an engaging and exemplary model for writing, and they will keep the completed works in their classroom portfolios which will serve to keep their work neat and organized so that they can go back and view the progress they have made in the course.

Your help in providing these materials to conduct an engaging and fun writers workshop will help to keep these students motivated in working towards their commendable goal of achieving a diploma. You could be the key to convincing a student that they can tell their story and change the lives of others through writing. Thank you for your consideration.
