Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. The majority of my students do not attend preschool before entering Kindergarten. A large number of my sweet students are EL learners. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative, developmentally appropriate, and meaningful learning experiences. The growth from August to May is almost unbelievable! Our school is special in that we are a Kindergarten-only school. Everything we do is for 5-6 year olds!

I have been teaching and LOVING Kindergarten since 1995.

I taught 1/2 a school year in first grade. I am blessed, honored, and humbled to be able to teach and influence 19 children Kindergarten students each school year. Each child has a story and I am honored to be part of that.

I am grateful to have had Donor's Choose grant proposals funded in the past. I am glad to be back and hopeful someone will see the value in the materials I am requesting for my kiddos!

My Project

Many experts have varying opinions regarding handwriting instruction. Writing by hand serves developmental needs in childhood that typing on a keyboard fails to provide. The materials I am requesting are interesting to children and will provide "cool" alternatives to old-school pencil and paper.

New evidence suggests that the links between handwriting and broader educational development run deep.

Children learn to read more quickly when they first learn to write by hand and are better able to generate ideas and retain information. It's not just what we write that matters - but how.

The materials I am requesting provide various ways children can practice their handwriting. I have many teacher-made fine motor activities in place in my classroom currently. These materials listed would provide a neat and interesting, engaging way to practice handwriting. The items are very much multi-purpose. I am requesting a class set of mini dry erase boards. Students would be able to write with me one step at a time. I also utilize online resources that require student participation and these boards will serve that purpose well! I hope to use these boards in place of some of the recording sheets that we use right now! I am all about saving trees.

I can use any of these items at small groups at my teacher table or on the rug. Once the students learn the proper use and care of the items, they will be available for independent use. I am very excited about the possibility of using the double-sided magnetic dry erase boards. We use magnetic letters, numbers, and shapes regularly in Kindergarten. The write & wipe answer boards open up many possibilities for answering during think time without disturbing their classmates.

Thank you for your time and consideration!
