Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Writing is one of the most difficult subjects for students with learning disabilities. As a teacher, I feel it is my job to passionately pursue ways to make writing easier and more understandable for these students. I teach a special education resource class for over 30 students with learning disabilities, autism, and a range of other disabilities. Nearly all of my students are on free and reduced lunch, with some living in poverty conditions.

My students are all performing significantly below grade level in all subjects, but most dramatically writing. Writing is a difficult subject because it requires fine-motor skills, a knowledge of spelling, and the ability to organize thoughts. My students really struggle with writing. They are embarrassed by their work and often feel defeated.

My heart breaks for these students. They try their hardest every day and I know that success could be in their grasp if they only had the necessary tools. If my students had voice recorders, they could orally respond to the writing prompt. Then they could play back their own words and write them down the way they had recorded it. Just this one tool would eliminate the mental process of trying to organize the details into written form and free up the students to produce the quality work that they are very capable of.

These digital voice recorders could make all the difference for my students. I am confident this small piece of technology could change the world of writing for these students. Maybe this will be the tool that will help them get excited about writing and put a smile on their faces.
