This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Welcome to my 5th grade classroom!

Our school is located in the Morrisania section of the South Bronx.

My students are my children and, as any parent would, I want the best for them!

Our school enrolls 97% economically disadvantaged students. Many of our children live in foster care, single-parent households, and shelters.

Of course, our classroom is a 2nd home for them, as they spend several hours with me and their peers. It is in a warm, engaging classroom environment where students grow not only academically, but learn how to deal with emotional issues and build social skills.

My Project

As a lover of writing myself, I enjoy teaching children to develop a love of writing and empowering them to continue to grow daily as writers. The most important thing is for them to understand their "voice" matters and the pen is powerful. Unfortunately, they often dislike writing, are fearful of writing, or are discouraged during writing time. It's important to have helpful resources available to them that will help them become more confident writers as they go through the writing process to publishing pieces of writing.

Writing helps to cultivate emotional growth, develop critical thinking skills and improve school performance.

Being able to express yourself is a “skill and gift." This is the skill and gift I want to give my students and have it last a lifetime! With thesauruses, students will power their brains with bigger, stronger words and gain confidence in their writing. With a laminating machine, students' writing books/pages will be preserved and valued with pride!
