Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Language lessons require various strategies. Not all students learn the same way. Some are visual learners, others are auditory learners, while others learn kinesthetically. In order to meet the needs of all of my students, they need to have a variety of resources to learn what is required of them.

My students reside in a community that contains low income housing.

99% of the families are economically poverty level, which means our school is Title I. Students are provided with free breakfast and lunch. The grades in our school range from kindergarten to fifth. We have a supportive parent-teacher association, who conducts several fundraisers annually and provides chaperons for our field trips. Our children are usually appreciative of our dedication and demonstrate a genuine love of learning.

My Project

For my students, I am seeking the following materials: sequencing cards, a Main Idea Listening Center Skill Pack, and a Teaching Reading Skills Activity Centers Skill Kit, in addition to other language arts materials. The language arts materials I have selected are designed to offer students individualized instruction by meeting every child's needs. The kits contain activities that allow students to learn visually, auditorily and kinesthetically. Additionally, the materials can be placed in centers, so students have the opportunity to use them individually, in pairs, or in small groups. Current research supports the fact that students learn best when they get to participate in exploratory activities, and learning becomes more meaningful when they internalize and apply their learning to real-life situations. With frequent use of the materials, the Common Core standards will be addressed and students will be successful when they complete their assessments.

The materials offer differentiated instruction.

Differentiating instruction enhances the quality of instruction in the classroom for a diverse group of students. When teachers differentiate instruction, they provide more than one way for students to access and learn the curriculum. The use of differentiated instruction puts more of the learning responsibility on the students. There are fewer discipline problems in classrooms where teachers provide a well-organized, differentiated, curriculum.
