My Students

Writing can be fun and easy. That is, if you can grip the pens better, trace the letters in a hands-on way, write each letter in a special-lined paper, and practice writing with easy to see print.

My students are high school aged.

Although many are medically fragile, their compromised health does not detract their spirit and enthusiasm for learning. Some are non-verbal. Some have physical challenges like vision impairment and cerebral palsy. They attend a school for students with multiple disabilities. All the instructional materials and strategies need to be adapted in order to address the unique learning needs of my students along with the physical and health-related delays presented by my exceptional students.

My Project

My students are in high school, yet they are still learning to write the letters of the alphabet. They have a hard time tracing and writing the letters because the school only supplies writing materials for typical learners. Even with the adaptations, writing on paper is difficult for them. With items in my shopping list, my students will be enabled to write in a fun, functional and environmentally friendly way. My students will benefit greatly from utilizing weighted pencils and pencil grips to help them hold the writing implements better. Students who are visually impaired can perform tracing activities using tactile cards. Students with low muscle tone can improve their fine motor skills by practicing on the re-usable tracing cards and mazes. My students need special lined paper and notebooks to keep them focused on writing one letter at a time. They also need adaptive scissors to be able to cut pictures more independently.

While all the materials can be adapted to suit the students' needs, there are times that a teacher can only do so much.

With limited resources, students' potential to write will not be maximized. I would like my students to go home and be able to show to their parents a simple letter that says "I love you!" in their own handwriting instead of a cut picture symbol.
