My Students

My English 1 Honors classroom is a place where students are asked to push their boundaries. Students spend this year learning the foundation of knowledge and skills they will need as they move forward in advanced studies.

The students are 9th graders in a suburban South Carolina classroom.

They are excited to explore the world of high school literature, to learn about the classics, and to expand their capacity for critical thinking. They take pride in their efforts and are willing to challenge their minds for the sake of learning.

My Project

From thank you letters to letters to their state representatives, these students are hoping to grab attention while learning the nuances of a properly written letter.

My students are hoping to use letters as a way to affect change in their local and statewide community.

Whether it be a note to a pen pal or a plea for funding, I would like to see my students engage in regular writing for a variety of purposes. I feel that these materials will empower these young leaders to affect change in their community and beyond. Social media is fine and dandy, but letters make a point!
