Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a second grade ESL teacher in Brooklyn, I work with a diverse, fun, and inspiring group of learners.

Every day that my students join me for class, they are prepared not only to practice math, learn how to read, and work on their writing, but also to improve their English language.

Most of my students are English language learners and many of them are new to the US. In my classroom, you may hear students speaking Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Arabic. I work in a Title One school in which ninety percent of our students receive free or reduced price lunch, meaning their family income is below the poverty line. In order to support their learning in both academics and English, my students require hands-on and visual materials.

My Project

New York State will be starting the school year with a blended model of in-school and remote learning. Usually, we put a large emphasis on sharing with our classmates, but this will not be possible with the current pandemic. When my students are in the classroom, they will each need individual sets of materials.

My hope is to supply each student with their own writing kit of developmentally appropriate materials.

Students will be able to use these kits in the classroom and then take them home for the days they will be remote learning.

This project will allow students to continue learning in a hands-on way while maintaining the safety of all students. By providing these materials for students, families will not feel the extra burden of buying school supplies during this difficult economic time.
