This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There are 24 creative and hardworking second grade students in our classroom. I forget that we are second graders this year -- I looped up with my first grade class so that we could have one more year together in all this uncertainty. We are the only second grade class in a high needs, low-income school on the Lower East Side in Manhattan. Despite so many hardships outside of our four walls, my students are eager to come to school to learn and do their best. Our classroom is the type of place where they feel not only safe, but brave and take risks and ask questions while leading their own learning.

My students each learn in their own way, and that often means dipping into my own pockets to support them, as their teacher, to make sure everyone succeeds.

Many of my students come from families that struggle to provide their children with supplies for school. I aim to inspire our earliest learners on a path of academic excellence by immersing them in a supportive, engaging and thought-provoking environment.

My Project

Handwriting has been hard in the virtual world. At such an early developmental stage, second grade learners still need the physical and fine motor parts of learning, which include holding a pencil. A lot of them struggle as they adapt to using an iPad to show their thinking. These stylus pens will open up a whole new digital interactive world for my scholars while learning at home, while removing their current struggle. A lot of my students do not have access to sharpeners, pens and pencils, which is an obstacle that can be easily removed!
