Flash drives save time – a valuable resource for all of us! I teach eighth grade English to a wide variety of students: special education, English language, and gifted learners all included. My job as a language arts teacher is to guide all students through the worlds of reading and writing, and many areas in between. Part of the language arts world is now computer literacy; everything from word processing to PowerPoint presentations, videos, and other digital products.
While we are fortunate to have up-to-date computer models, that now means that floppy disks are obsolete. Flash drives have not quite become the common-place school supply item, despite USB ports being the only mode to save and transfer computer data. Most students who work on something at school currently do not have a way to continue that work at home, and unfortunately our school computer time is limited. Students want to be able to continue work at home or at the public library but are stuck with having to re-do work or piece together things from multiple computers.
In order to make the most of class time and potential homework time, I would love to be able to offer flash drives for check out to make the transfer of work much easier. How many times have you had to drag your work laptop home, email something to yourself, or put it on a flash drive to work on later? My students don’t have the first two options, and I’d like to make the third a possibility for them. I would like a starter set of 20 flash drives that students could save their work on, and check out for those moments when their class time just isn’t quite enough to perfect their product.
Students need to be computer literate in this world... and that doesn't just mean navigating the worlds of MySpace or MSN. Your donation will encourage students to put their best work forward in their digital products, because the ability to save on a flash drive gives them the flexibility to finish on their own time. Your generosity will show students that there are people who realize the little things can make a big difference. Help students get their work done in a “flash!”
