My Students

The excitement to write comes from reading well-written books. Certain stories are good mentors for children because they show students what good writing looks like. Picture books in particular provide clear, specific examples of various writing crafts that the authors used in their writing.

Our school is a small public school with students from many different countries around the world, with varied life experiences.

Being small is an advantage, in which all the students know each other well, work together and take care of each other. Parents help in the classroom and the community spirit flourishes. Students share books with one another and discuss what they read in literature circles. Some students have the means to have books at home and others go to the library to get their books. We are currently reading the same books together and studying so many features of text as a group. My students love to read and are making incredible connections to stories we have completed together with ones we are currently reading. We use literature and picture books to help us with writing as well. I read my students stories and teach them how different authors used a particular craft in his or her writing.

My Project

I am excited at the prospect of using mentor texts to launch particular writing mini lessons. There are many craft lessons that I will be teaching my classroom throughout the year such as writing strong leads, staying on topic, using strong verbs, and finding a focus. These books will give students well-written examples for the lessons that I want them to learn and take into their own writing. My students will learn all of the different features that a story contains and how various authors weaved them into their own writing.

These books will provide my students with wonderful examples of well-written stories.

I will use the books to teach a particular craft that the author included in his or her story. They will be read to and read plenty of examples of great fiction, nonfiction and opinion pieces all of which are pieces of writing that they are expected to know how to write before they leave my classroom. My students will learn how to write using these exemplar stories.
