Our students are writing more than ever and in so many different ways. As teachers, we strive to make the learning meaningful, interesting and fun. This is sometimes difficult to do with resistant and reluctant writers.
With these text to speech headphones, students will be engaged in the writing process and be able to record their writing digitally and in a scaffolded way.
The headphones will allow students who are challenged with physically writing and typing to use the microphones to record their writing through speech to text technology. While other students will use them to read their writing back, as they check it for accuracy using the text to speech option.
Last year, I was limited on how many students could use these options. I only had a few headphones with microphones. I was forced to choose students who needed it the most, leaving some out. With a classroom set, this will not happen. Any student with the need will have the opportunity. The students who became successful using these headphones were more eager to write and asking if they could write other stories for me.
Also, we use a color coded system to identify different parts of our writing: introduction, conclusion, details etc.... When you have 60-80 students per day, its difficult to keep their map pencils and crayons sharpened to complete the color coding of their writing. With these 2 sharpeners, students will be able to sharpen both crayons and map pencils without over using the class pencil sharpener. Students enjoyed the color coding, and they used this strategy when they were writing for themselves.
Both strategies helped my reluctant writers to challenge themselves, and not be overwhelmed with the writing process. They also helped my students who do well, to SOAR even higher!
