My Students

Remember how you felt the first time you wrote your name correctly without any help from a grownup? Some of my students have not yet mastered letter identification and formation. This year could be the year that they master the art of handwriting.

My students are special needs children in a community school; I see them a couple times week to help them achieve their goals and be on par with their peers.

I am an occupational therapist at a Title 1 school in Brooklyn. We are a public, high poverty school, with the majority of the students receiving free or reduced price meals at school. My students come form various ethnic backgrounds. The children on my caseload are in both general education and special education classrooms. These students have challenges like Autism, ADHD, and speech/language delays.

My Project

As an occupational therapist I assist the children with improving their fine motor skills which include buttoning, zipping, shoe tying and handwriting. The children I see all have visual perceptual delays which affect their handwriting. For example, the children are unable to make the letters touch the line, others write passed the margins, or some of them form their letters backward or upside down. Instead of buying expensive adaptable notebooks for each child, I can download, create, and print the special paper according to what each child needs using a printer. I am requesting 1 printer and 2 ink cartridges to print out activities to help each student write better.

Our school does not allocate monies for adaptable notebooks.

By donating the printer, you will help the children master handwriting and gain self confidence in themselves. It will help them complete their school work on time.
