My Students

I teach students on the Autism spectrum in an 8:1:1 setting. All my students are reading and writing enthusiasts. In their own unique way, they all enjoy reading/listening to a text and engaging in varied forms of writing whether a scribble, drawing or proper word-formation.

My students' ability to learn and communicate in their own unique ways has shown that individual success manifests itself through self-determination, hard work and overcoming challenges through teamwork.

As emergent readers and writers, my students face the challenge of falling significantly below their age-appropriate reading and writing levels. This challenge is further coupled with the lack of sufficient materials and resources to adequately accommodate the needs of the students. Reading and writing are fundamental to the learning process. With the use of additional purposeful reading and writing tools in the classroom, students will be able to generalize and transition the skills they have acquired during reading and writing to other content areas. My students are always eager to read and write. With the resources being requested, the students will undoubtedly benefit from a more expansive variety of classroom reading and writing materials.

My Project

Students will be able to access the content through purposeful and beneficial writing. The lesson will help students focus on the writing component of the topic. Writing allows students to put their ideas and thoughts where it can be visualized. This can be used to assess the students' thinking and provide feedback for further clarification and progress. The materials will be used to give students instructions to how they can transform their ideas into a visual format where it may be shared with others. It is essential that students learn the various ways of presenting their work to an audience. This not only aids the students' sense of accomplishment but also helps in their creativity.
