Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a special education teacher, my goal is to help my students see that anything is possible. Many of my students have great difficulty with writing. Many of them didn't know how to even begin writing their own stories. They are discouraged by their disabilities and do not feel that writing is an enjoyable and purposeful activity. I try to show my students that knowing how to read and write well is their ticket to being successful in the future. I serve students who posses different learning difficulties. As a Resource teacher, I see about twenty five students every day in different groups. I try to group my students by ability, not by grade levels. I see that they tend to open up once they see that they are not the only ones who are struggling in the group. Writer's workshop is a difficult concept to my children. They are not used to looking at their ideas with such detail. I try to involve my students in the entire process by exposing them to the various genres of reading. Then the students take a vote on which genre they would like to concentrate on. I try to expose them to that particular genre by reading to them quality books. We then begin the writing process. Students choose their own topics after brainstorming a list of topics. There are times that it would take us two months before we have published books. I try to emphasize that authors need to perfect their stories by going back to their drafts and revising and editing it over and over until they feel they have done their best. I have a great binding machine that is the big motivation for my children. They love publishing their books and sharing their final product with everyone. When I say everyone I mean their classroom teacher, the Assistant Principal and even the school Principal. They can't wait to take their books home and show them to their parents. We usually have a writer's celebration before they take these books home. I found some great materials that will allow me to make the Writer's Workshop a bit more exciting. When I saw the Recipes for Good Writing Card Bank and the Write and Publish Activity Center, I thought that those materials would help me introduce the different genres and expose my students to great information. The Recipes for Good Writing Card Bank can be used in a mini-lesson before the students look at their own writing at the beginning of each lesson. The Writers Notebooks will allow my students to feel more organized by providing a step by step guide of how to develop their writing. It contains important checklists and self evaluations to develop independent thinkers. It also has some important writing strategies for my students to follow. I also included some dictionaries and thesauruses for my students to use during the writer's workshop. I will use these resources throughout writing process every single day. Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal. I can assure you that my students will have a great time learning how to become independent writers using these great supplies.
