This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In first grade, students get more comfortable in their writing yet there are times they lose their vision and the motivation can decrease. However, through my writing models, shared writing pieces and scaffolding, we all get through the writing piece of the unit. Drawing at this stage becomes more of a “need to get over it quickly” and be done.

I have noticed that when students are exposed to new types of paper, lines, writing tools and colored markers, the interest in drawing wonderful and creative images increases!

So with this project, I look forward to giving my students new hues and types of markers to use in their final drafts of writing pieces. That is why I put metallic and glittery markers in this project. I also put packs of 64 different colors of markers that have different shades of the basic 12 colors they get in their class sets. These 64 markers are also “pipsqueaks” which means they are shorter than the average marker, making it easier for students to use if they have difficulty with fine motor skills. The black felt tip markers in this project are for tracing their pencil drawings and words in the publishing stage of the writing process.

I can guarantee my students’ engagement will increase as they get to use these new drawing tools to add into their creative writing process, hopefully instilling a love, at least interest, of writing for different purposes and audiences.
