My Students

My students are amazing! They've experienced many low points during this COVID-19 school year, both personally and academically, but they have never lost their sense of hope, determination, and belief that the world is an amazing place and is worth fighting for. They inspire me and continue to help me realize why I joined the teaching profession!

The educational landscape has been indelibly altered and transformed by the COVID-19 pandemic; the effects of which will continue to be felt for many years to come but we are a resilient bunch and with your continued support, we can adapt and continue to flourish as we strive to learn about ourselves and the world around us.

To look at my students and the ways in which they continue to show up every day in the face of extremely huge mental and emotional obstacles is inspiring, to say the least. There's almost an indefatigable sense of determination that this is their world, their future, and they will fight for it tooth and nail. How can I not be inspired by this display of courage?

My Project

Writing and visualizing can be an involved process that is personal to every student. This year has emphasized writing through typing while we have not had any chances to complete visualization activities/artwork and this can sometimes make writing and learning seem impersonal and disconnected.

My intention is to introduce writing via "pen to paper" and visualizing via posters, artwork, and drawings again through activities where my students will use pens, markers, and colored pencils while being surrounded by inspirational decorations.

This school year has prevented us from working in groups/collaboratively but my goal is to include such critically important moments once again during the next school year. One of my main goals is to provide my students the chance to write in physical journals once again and the pens, markers, colored pencils, and journaling pens will be extremely useful for this since they will be able to write and decorate their entries when we complete these exercises. Using common items such as colored pencils, markers, pens, etc. opens up more ways for my students to learn abstract concepts by recording concrete examples and visualizations. This is especially important for my visual students and, for all students, creativity is a necessary part of learning. Creativity also needs an environment that supports it and the basic classroom decorations such as the inspirational confetti accents, succulents, and tree of knowledge wall decal will provide visuals that can inspire and encourage my students to tap into their creative sides as they engage in such activities.

As we strive to get back to "normal", it is necessary to think about the foundational aspects of English class and, for me, that is the ability to explore writing and visualizing in creative ways through the use of awesome resources such as high-quality colored pencils, markers, and pens.
