My Students

I teach third-grade math and science at a Pre-K through 5th-grade school in North Miami Beach. Most of my students are high-poverty and have limited technology at home.

After Hurricane Irma, the financial situation for most of our students became even worse and they are still facing the challenges of coming to school with basic supplies, and now we have started welcoming students displaced by Hurricane Maria, so the challenges are real.

Most students do not even have computer access at home.

My students are always excited to use technology in the classroom and when we do center activities, they rush for the computers to explore online math and science resources. For most of our students, Internet access and the use of computers are a luxury that they do not have at home.

My Project

Most of my students are high-poverty and some have very limited resources at home. My 3rd-grade students are always excited to use manipulatives such as blocks and counters in class. When we do center activities, they rush to the center tables or center carpet.

Now that we have started welcoming students from Puerto Rico who were affected by Hurricane Maria, more resources are needed.

In fact, most of our students are still facing the challenges of coming to school with basic supplies.

As we are embarking to be designated officially a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) school, building and engineering using math concepts have now infiltrated every aspect of how our math is taught. We recently received math manipulatives and games through DonorsChoose.org and already see the difference in the students' attitudes towards math. The requested Write and Wipe Boards will make math even more engaging. As educators, we want to make learning math as fun, real-to-life and engaging as possible for our student population.
