My Students

All of us have great stories and ideas we want to share with others and this kindergarten class is gearing up to do just that, now that we've been working on building our reading and writing skills all year.

My school is located in a working-class, inner-city neighborhood of Los Angeles and many of my students come from low-income households.

Many of my students have parents who work multiple jobs and struggle to meet the everyday needs of their children, such as providing regular meals or a consistent bedtime. Many struggle simply to help their children with completing daily homework assignments. Yet, the children are eager to learn and come to school every day with positive attitudes, ready to build on the knowledge they have gained over time.

My Project

My students need a replacement bulb for our Epson Projector Lamp, 60 pens, 50 folders, a stapler, easel paper and sheet protectors to begin their story writing. A majority of my students do not have regular access to their own writing materials, such as paper and pens, so giving these students a chance to write and illustrate their stories on a daily basis at school will be a very valuable experience for them. We will be able to draw, label, and write about places we've visited and things we know about, as well as teach others how to do things. In writing these stories, we will learn about the writing process of revising, editing, and publishing.

When students see that they can put their ideas down on paper and write their own stories, the connections made between verbal storytelling and written text is so very valuable to these young children who are just beginning their school journey.

For students who are now just beginning to make the connection between oral and written language, the materials purchased from this project will help give them the tools necessary in realizing they truly are readers and writers.
